Interview : in English 1986, Japan. |
Further reading will reveal a strange aspect of this encounter. It would seem natural to feel terrified at the sight of a UFO many times larger than a jumbo jet plane. However, here, the captain's attitude towards the UFO seems to even show friendliness rather than horror. Actual encounters often report of psychological influences from UFOs. I believe that there had been a similar effect with Captain Terauchi's case here as well. Testimony of Captain Terauchi is in the form of a tape cassette. I have received this from someone, and have put the statements into print. I decided to update the issue on this website by organizing some of the details. Statements in brackets are notes I have inserted myself. The distance units of the interview had originally been in feet, which I have conversed into meters. Abbreviations in the text are as follows: questions by the interviewer will be indicated as "Q". "A" signifies the comments of Captain Terauchi. I have inserted sketches drawn by the captain, too. Also, I heard recently from one of the airline members that Captain Terauchi is well, working at a different post. On November 17th, 1986, Jumbo Jet Special Freight, JAL 1628 encountered an UFO. Concerning this incident, the following information has been understood from some documents that were in my possession. The day of the incident, Captain Terauchi had reported the matter in specific details to Jim Terry, Administrative Official of FAA (Federal Aviation Administration - a government organization of United States Control Center), and to the head office of Japan Airlines. Both, however, remained silent on the issue. About a month later on December 29th, Captain Terauchi happened to speak of the incident to a friend who worked for Kyodo News in London. The news spread around the world instantly, and the media quickly gathered around the captain, FAA, and JAL. FAA responded that there were no UFOs identified by the radar system, and that the plane had merely captured a "split image" (a radar-ghost that generates behind the shadow of the plane). However, according to Kyodo News Anchorage correspondent Shokichi Kibe, the local magazine coverage of January 8th indicated that, "On that particular day, there had been 3 officers on duty at the control center, and all three of them responded to the interviews that they had seen a UFO, and that they had believed it had certainly not been a split image." On how Japan Airlines reacted to the matter, they responded to Nippon TV in written form as follows: "We have received reports from the captain after arriving Anchorage, and the reason why we never announced it officially was because we could never identify what it actually was, and there were no special instructions from the FAA either. We, as a cooperation, do not feel that we are in any adequate position to comment on the incident." Moreover, it seems that there had been a personnel who had visited Captain Terauchi in Anchorage, and advised him to "drop the subject". Since then, Captain Terauchi had stopped responding to interviews. The interview with the captain on this column seems to be from just before he had stopped speaking. Also, the media had never taken up the issue either. Q : Interviewer@A : Captain Terauchi - Japan Airline - ( Comments ) : Junichiro Nirasawa. Q : How did you recognize first that it was a UFO? A : It was just after we passed "Kotack" (? likely to be an aeronautical beacon point at the north of Alaska between the national borderline of Canada). We saw a light that seemed like an airplane at (30 degrees) to our left, and 4000 meters ahead (and 650 meters below).
Lights were blinking on these two objects. They had such a strange movement. Appearing right in front of our eyes, they seemed to make a perfect halt there. We were flying at 900 kilometers per hour. For the two objects to "stop completely" before us they would first have to approach from 30 degrees ahead, and slow down to fly at our speed, at the same time reversing their movement to fly ahead once again. A lot of energy is required for this kind of movement. It was a dynamic reverse injection. Actually, it was this reverse injection causing that strong blinking light.....! OK! So that was what this illumination was all about. My mind was wandering upon these thoughts for about 3 to 7 seconds. The cockpit seemed like it was during the daytime because of the brightness, and even our faces felt hot. Everyone was so astonished. However, soon after, all those lights faded into a small one, and shifted into regular blinking. I had learned something from the movement of the objects that seemed like a static picture, right in front of us. What we'd perceived as lights were actually numerous exhaust holes. These holes were opened, and they seemed to me as spinning around. Perhaps it's better I drew them for you. It is quite possible they had been engine exhausts. However, I feel certain their energy source is not identical to ours, nor could we possibly imagine what kind. They moved at an unbelievable speed to approach us. For them to fly the same way, and at the same altitude with us after that, they would have to tolerate a very high degree of inertia and a great deal of gravity. We human beings do not possess any sort of flying vehicle that can do a thing like that without blowing up and shattering into pieces. They had complete control of inertia and gravity. It just couldn't be one of us. It was something beyond our expectations. It seemed to me that they wanted to communicate to us that they meant no harm. Q : Could you tell me next about the large mother ship that you saw? And how surprised you were at the sight? A : Our jumbo jet was fairly a large one among the airplanes that are used at present..... It may be about this size (draws a picture) Q : This looks like a huge unearthly thing. You can tell just by looking at it. (Looking at the picture drawn.) A :The second light withdrew from its position, so all the time, my mind had been captured on that. The shape of this second light was a bit strange. It kept the exact same distance all the while it was flying.
I didn't like how it felt, so I asked Fairbanks Airport below. They seemed to believe me to some extent, but said they didn't see anything, although I kept telling them to check on the radar because I was seeing those lights. I hinted upon using our (the Jumbo Jet's) weather radar. We directed the angle of the radar horizontally, and switched it to 20 miles, the shortest distance, since it was not so far. (1 mile is 1.6 kilometers.) 20 miles is indicated with four lines, and one line suggests 5 miles (see drawing : below). As a result, a very large green circular mark appeared 7 to 8 miles away from us at 60 degrees in the advancing direction. Other than that there were no clouds - just the object. If it had been a regular airplane, it would be shown on the radar as a red mark. However, what we saw was a green disk on the radar. I told below (Fairbanks Airport) what we had captured on our radar, and asked them again to detect it immediately.
Q : Which means it was as if they were listening to your conversation? A : Yes, it seemed like they knew what we were saying. At first our conversation with Fairbanks was quite relaxed, but by this time, our statements must have been pretty tense (because of arising fear), and I think they well noticed this difference in our tones. So, there must have been an intention to communicate that they were not going to cause us too much threat. Continue to NEXT .... |
